Quarter Loop

Satisfying loops, drawn in code. One machine or material doing one perfect thing, round and round, with no seam where it starts again.

What a loop is

Watch it go round one more time.

Marbles that ride a wheel forever, parts that drop into exactly their slots, colours that sort themselves. Every loop is made of the same three things.

  1. One motion

A marble lift, a sorter, a press, a conveyor: one machine or material doing one thing. There is nothing else in the picture to look at, so you look at that.

  2. Round without a seam

The last frame is the first frame. YouTube plays a Short again as soon as it ends, so the loop simply carries on, and you are not sure when it started again.

  3. On the beat

The length of a loop is a whole number of bars of music, and the motion is timed to it: every landing, click and drop falls on a beat and is heard as a sound of its own.

How it is made

Nothing in it is filmed.

Drawn in code

Each loop is a drawing that is a pure function of time, in the flat style of Quarter Cut turned up to full colour: saturated rooms, bright machines, the same library of drawn parts.

Sound made in code

Every click, roll and drop in the picture is a sound effect made for it, over a quiet music bed whose tempo is locked to the loop. Nothing is licensed or downloaded.

Checked frame by frame

Before a loop goes out it is measured: the frame at its end has to be its first frame, nothing may jump at the seam, and nothing may stand still.

Coming soon

The first loops are being made.

Quarter Loop opens on YouTube soon, from the makers of Quarter Cut. Until then, the sibling channel has a new video every day.
